In March 2023, major Korean broadcasters KBS, MBC and SBS travelled to Tokyo to broadcast live matches at the 2023 World Baseball Classic (WBC) championship. KBS, and the other Rights Holding Broadcasters (RHBs) specifically requested that the WBC organising committee supply the Tieline ViA audio codec for transport of their main and backup feeds back to South Korea.
This request was facilitated and all major Korean RHBs used the Tieline ViA to deliver all audio sources for coverage of the event, including live commentary audio, intercom, and mix-minus return feeds for monitoring. KBS, MBC and SBS all have Tieline codecs at their studios in South Korea, so the ViA codecs dialled into these codecs from Tokyo.
All broadcasters connected at between 256Kbps and 386 kbps using Music PLUS encoding in stereo. Two Ethernet lines were provided for each broadcaster. One was dedicated for the main transmission audio codec and the other was provided for a backup codec or video transmission gear. The main KBS audio codec used LAN and WiFi connections and data was aggregated using Tieline’s Fuse-IP technology. Audio sent back to each network’s MCR was matched with the Host Broadcast pictures from Tokyo for the four matches covered.
Broadcasting from the event was a great success and the only disappointment was that the Korean team didn’t progress deeper into the competition. After the WBC tournament, I met Mr Park from KBS, who was the main Audio Engineer in Tokyo, and he said the event ran smoothly with no issues whatsoever. This is yet another event where Tieline has delivered flawless, high quality audio solutions to a wide audience in South Korea.
