i-Mix Joins the World's Largest Convoy
Dean Rich from Illawarra Production Services recently provided i98FM with an i-Mix G3 and other equipment to take on the road to report on the Camp Quality Convoy, which is Illawarra’s biggest fundraising day of the year.

“This is a huge community event and over 700 trucks and 700 bikes set out on a 70km journey from Appin to Shellharbour raising money for families dealing with cancer,” said Dean. “Each year i98FM broadcast the event live throughout the journey from a moving car and at various stationary points along the way. It requires a bit of planning and careful thought but it runs quite seamlessly once we set it all up.”
“On the day we installed the i-Mix in a car with a 12V power supply and placed a dipole antenna on the roof to improve our 3G network signal strength. This worked really well and we maintained a seamless connection when moving across different cell towers during the journey.”
“From 4.30am to midday the live link to the studio was maintained using the Telstra NextG 3G wireless network. This was very stable and during this period there were numerous live crosses. When we got to Shellharbour the flexibility of the i-Mix allowed us to connect over a fixed PSTN phone line and this was also rock solid.”

“The announcers used HMD headsets with mic booms when broadcasting from the vehicle. When stationary they roamed outside the vehicle using wireless Lectrosonics receivers and hand mikes. This provided mobility and the ability to mingle with the crowd and do interviews more easily. We also attached a sound effects mic to the i-Mix so that we could mix in some atmospherics throughout the event.”
“The return program mix-minus was very important for cueing the announcers when we crossed to the studio throughout the day. It was also very important at the start of the event when we fed studio program into an RF transmitter and provided the NSW Police with an RF receiver, so they could hear the studio and start the convoy at the appropriate time while we were broadcasting live.”

“Illawarra Production Services provided all the broadcast equipment for the radio OB, as well as the stage and PA setup in Shellharbour at the end of the event. It was a great family fun day and this year Diesel and Wes Carr appeared in concert and played to a rapturous audience.”
“Close to $700,000 dollars was raised for an exceptionally good cause and overall everyone was over the moon with the results of the OB. It went really well and the quality of the broadcast was much better than using a mobile phone.”
